Mother Nature will ring in the New Year by warming things up after a cool December. The National Weather Service office in San Diego predicts “clear skies with warm days (and) cool nights” for the weekend and beyond. Steve Vanderburg, a weather service meteorologist, said December’s temperatures averaged about 1 degrees below normal.

A league source confirmed to ESPN.com on Thursday that it is possible the Winter Classic could only go two periods if the weather doesn’t cooperate and the game would still be deemed official.
